Job Description

The Faculty of Education in central Cambridge seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Art Education. It offers an exciting opportunity for a research-active educator to join a leading national and international centre for educational research, teacher development, and the study of education.

The successful candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of colleagues in the Faculty specialising in art education. The person appointed will be expected to contribute to the international profile of the Faculty through research publications, grant capture, impactful dissemination, and public engagement.

Candidates should be enthusiastic contributors to a wide variety of arts education programming. The successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to lead our Secondary PGCE Art course and engage with our postgraduate Arts, Creativity and Education MPhil course. Candidates should recognise that the post requires a strong commitment to art teacher education. As such, experience of teaching at secondary school level, and practising as an artist, may also be an advantage.

Applications are particularly welcome from those who will bring critical lenses to contemporary understandings of the application of arts in education and in society more broadly, and who will be able to engage with, and contribute to, debates and discourse around traditional and contemporary approaches to fine and visual art education in schools and colleges. Other potential areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, the roles and spaces afforded by intersections between digital technologies and art education; artistic research methods including practice-as-research, arts-based research and post-qualitative research practices; decolonial, intersectional and non-Western approaches to art education.

Working with other colleagues, the successful candidate will be expected to make an immediate contribution to the Faculty’s teaching and research. This includes leading the art PGCE and supervising the cohort of art PGCE students; teaching innovative research methods to PhD level, and supervision of postgraduate research students; teaching and supervision of full and part-time Masters’ students; teaching on the Faculty’s BA programme. The Faculty is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. Candidates will hold a PhD in a relevant subject, or be close to completion in their doctoral studies and have a record of excellent research in their field. Contributions to excellence in research will be through peer-reviewed publications and other activities of a kind and quality that meet international standards as assessed in national research assessment exercises.

The successful candidate will have relevant experience of working with postgraduate students, including teaching, mentoring or supervising PGCE students, contributing to Masters programmes and supervising PhD students. The ability to manage a diverse workload and work cooperatively with academic colleagues and support staff is essential.
