Job Description

The School of Education at the University of Brighton is one of the UK’s largest providers of education and teacher training with a long-established reputation for high quality courses. Our work in the initial teacher education provision has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted in our 2018 inspection. We are ranked in the top 15 for education courses in England, in the Complete University Guide 2021 and in the top 15 in the UK in the Times League Tables 2021. We are also delighted to have been voted School of the Year by Brighton Students’ Union two years in a row.

We have been educating teachers and other professionals for over 100 years and have a permanent teaching and research team of more than 90 experts. Our expertise spans all phases of learning and development, from the early years through to adult education and at any time we have around 1,200 students registered on courses with the school.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Dean to lead our vibrant community and play a pivotal role in the strategic development, operation and academic performance of the School in relation to their teaching, education and research. The Dean will provide academic vision and direction to the School, effective leadership of staff and management of resources.

Furthermore, as a senior leader of the University, the Dean of the School of Education will be collectively responsible, with the University Executive Board, for shaping the academic strategic direction, development and performance of the University through specific institution-wide responsibilities.

The Dean will represent the School of Education and the University externally to build strategic partnerships, enhance reputation and contribute to relevant regional, national and international developments of the associated subjects and professions. We are, therefore, looking for candidates who will bring truly inspirational leadership and a pioneering, transformative outlook to teaching, learning and research activities, as well as the ability to negotiate and navigate complex situations.

Through our partnership, we work closely with over 600 schools and colleges in the region, hence the position requires an individual comfortable in managing strategic partnerships and with a strong understanding of the educational landscape for the benefit of the School and its stakeholders.
