Job Description

The Natural History Museum (NHM) is a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre and commercial event space. We use our unique collections and unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million specimens, both in our London and Tring museums, spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually.

Our South Kensington site, often described as a cathedral to nature, is one of Britain’s most striking examples of Romanesque architecture and one of London’s most iconic landmarks. We plan to maximise the potential of this site and our beautiful museum in Tring.

The range of our activities, both commercial and free, is far reaching as we aim to deepen engagement with our audiences and build a resilient and sustainable organisation.

Our Media and PR team is responsible for protecting and promoting the reputation of the Museum and publicising the Museum’s public programme, including all temporary exhibitions, supporting the Museum’s fundraising and commercial priorities and generating coverage and recognition for its cutting-edge scientific research. The team is responsible for all the Natural History Museum’s editorial dealings with media.

About the role

You will be working closely with the Museum’s Marketing and Digital teams to develop and deliver a communications strategy (both consumer and b2b) for the Museum’s commercial teams including: Visitor Events (which deliver events such as Dino Snores for Kids, Yoga and Crime Scene Live) Touring Exhibitions, Venue Hire, Retail, Brand Licensing and Publishing.

This is varied role which includes delivering media coverage for a range of Museum activity such as the creative programme of Visitor Events and high-profile licensing partners, such as Farrow and Ball and Oasis, developing and overseeing trade and consumer communications campaigns; proactively publicising the Museum’s international touring exhibitions in consumer and b2b publications,as well as planning and delivering social content for Venue Hire including live Instagram posting and inputting into this team’s marketing strategy.

About you

A talented self-starter, you will have excellent communication skills and be able to establish key relationships quickly across the Museum to identify any newsworthy activities and secure proactive positive communication of the Museum’s commercial activity.

You will enjoy working in a fast-paced and varied environment and have significant experience in managing reputational issues.

Significant experience of delivering commercial PR campaigns – both consumer and b2b to help deliver revenue targets; and of leading the planning, implementation and evaluation of successful proactive PR campaigns for high-profile organisations, in support of business objectives, will be essential.
