Job Description

Cheshire Constabulary Fleet Services are responsible for keeping the force moving on a daily basis with its fleet of nearly 900 vehicles everything from cars and vans to motorbikes and boats clocking up 12 million miles a year. A team of highly skilled and enthusiastic individuals keeps this fleet of vehicles on the road and you can also see the team in action in Series 1 of the Dave TV programme “Cop Car Workshop”.

Based at Cheshire Constabulary Headquarters in Winsford, we are looking for a Workshop Assistant with experience in a vehicle workshop environment with experience in 4 key areas.

  • Wheels and Tyres
  • Workshop Assistance
  • Driving
  • Vehicle Cleaning

We are looking for someone who has experience in changing vehicle wheels and tyres and is willing to progress to become a City and Guilds qualified tyre fitter which will be needed to successfully complete the probationary period.

The ideal candidate will also have some minor vehicle repair and maintenance skills to carry out the more straightforward work in the workshop. You will also be on hand to assist our team of highly skilled Vehicle Technicians in their work

Another useful skillset would be experience in driving vehicles on behalf of an organisation in a professional capacity and also carrying out vehicle cleaning / valet duties.

The role is demanding with a high level of manual handling, stretching and bending and working in awkward positions such as vehicle footwells involved. The role requires you to have a full UK Driving license. Any other Motor Vehicle Repair qualifications would be desirable but not essential.

The ideal candidate will have experience on cars and vans including large vans. You will need to have a “can do” attitude and good customer service skills. The role is focussed on repairing vehicles to maintain a high level of vehicle availability to support front line Policing.

Alongside these manual skills it would be advantageous to have other skills based around a vehicle workshop reception type environment such as:

  • Experience dealing with customers professionally face to face or on the phone
  • Experience in a workshop reception booking in and out jobs
  • Experience with computerised booking systems and / or data input

The working hours are 37 per week starting at 8am. Finish time is 4pm Monday to Thursday and 3:30pm on Fridays. Overtime is very limited and is voluntary on an ad-hoc basis.

Experience, Qualifications & Skills Prior Education and Experience

  • Full UK Driving License
  • City & Guilds – Certificate for Tyre Fitting – Car and Van or equivalent
  • Substantial experience working in a vehicle workshop environment.
  • Substantial experience as a trained tyre fitter
  • Substantial experience completing minor vehicle repair.
  • Significant experience driving for and on behalf of a company
  • Significant vehicle cleaning experience


  • The ideal candidate will have worked in a vehicle workshop environment and have knowledge of working on vehicles in a professional capacity.
  • Good general knowledge of workshop and vehicle health and safety risks
  • Physically fit and conversant with safe manual handling skills.
  • knowledge of working with hand and power tools.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces such as vehicle foot wells and work that requires bending, stretching and kneeling and crouching.
  • Professional tyre fitting skills.
  • Knowledge and skills related to carrying out minor repairs on vehicles
  • Knowledge & skills in driving vehicles professionally
  • Knowledge of how to carry out vehicle cleaning correctly, efficiently & safely
