Job Description

Are you a Safety Case Engineer with a track record in the production of safety case assessments for nuclear or other high hazard plant and operations?

Could you provide safety case support to existing and future fusion facilities both at UKAEA and in the wider fusion community?

Can you contribute to implementing modern best practice safety assessment methodologies? If so, we would like to hear from you.

We are seeking Safety Case Engineers to contribute to, and produce, safety cases and supporting technical reports, largely for radiological hazards. You`ll be implementing a proportionate approach to safety case development and contributing to the improvement of our systems, people and processes.

Key areas of responsibility will include:
  • Carrying out deterministic safety analysis and probabilistic safety assessment
  •  Selecting and applying appropriate models and values for the fault scenarios
  • Working with a range of stakeholders, to obtain information relevant to the safety case and produce technical reports in support of the safety cases
  •  Contributing to, and carrying out, the assessment of safety case modifications, reviewing the existing safety case and determining whether the safety limits are being challenged
  • Attending and inputting into the design review process
  • Contributing to ensuring modern best practice safety case methodologies and technologies are followed
  • Supporting the maintenance and development of the safety assessment handbook, safety case production software and intranet

The portfolio consists of safety case activities focused on radiological hazards, for existing facilities such as JET and MAST and new build facilities such as STEP and H3AT, as well as contribution of technical expertise to other relevant work programmes within the broader fusion communities.

Knowledge skills and experience

Essential

You will strengthen and complement our existing team with experience that includes:

– Production and maintenance of safety cases for high hazard plant and operations
– Experience in Hazard Identification, including as a HAZOP Chair and in Hazard Analysis
– Experience in performing Design Basis Analysis and Probabilistic Risk Assessment
– Experience in Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis and Event Tree Analysis

Your professional training should include safety case writing.

Your education should include a degree or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline.
