Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated part-time Research Fellow (0.6 FTE) to join the Department of Neuroscience at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), which is a joint venture between the Universities of Sussex and Brighton. The post is funded by a research grant from the charity Versus Arthritis and is in collaboration with the University of Oxford. It is fixed term for 36 months. The post will be based at the University of Sussex, Falmer.

The study is led by Professor Andrew Dilley (BSMS) and Dr Annina Schmid (University of Oxford). It will examine the role of peripheral neuroinflammation in the development of chronic pain in patients following a whiplash injury. As part of this study, we hope to identify a simple clinical test that may predict those patients who will develop chronic symptoms.

The project will use a combination of magnetic resonance imaging, quantitative sensory testing and the assessment of blood inflammatory biomarkers to determine the presence of peripheral neuroinflammation.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A clinical background, preferably in physiotherapy or nursing, although candidates with a background in the biomedical sciences will also be considered.
  • A higher degree (PhD or MSc).
  • Previous experience of research governance and/or conducting clinical research.
  • Knowledge of the pain field.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A willingness to work flexibly.

The post is based at the Trafford Centre for Biomedical Research and the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre on the University of Sussex campus. The successful candidate will be part of the vibrant multi-disciplinary ‘Sussex Neuroscience’ research community, which consists of systems, behavioural, molecular, and computational neuroscientists.
