With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications to target, you will work on projects that are fundamental to our global success.
Product design & development pathway:
Our engineering teams are responsible for the delivery of everything the customer sees and touches on a vehicle.
The manufacturing engineering team develop in house solutions for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of all our facilities and processes.
These teams create and develop engineering solutions from the virtual to the physical environment to deliver world class products, processes and facilities. Working efficiently, our goal is to create high-quality, desirable and technologically advanced products that will shape the future of mobility.
APEP apprentices following the product design & development pathway could be based within Core Engineering (Body/Chassis, Vehicle Engineering, Product Engineering Operations, Product Integrity) or Manufacturing engineering.
Body Chassis Engineering – is one of the largest engineering departments within the business with growth plans for expansion in the UK, India and China. Body Chassis Engineering is responsible for the delivery of practically everything the customer sees and touches on a vehicle. Apprentices will join one of many departments across Body/Chassis Engineering including body structures, exterior systems, seating systems, cabin & safety Systems. This will see you managing commodities through the product creation and development system into production or using CAD and CAE analysis tools to improve product designs and assist in the resolution of engineering problems.
Vehicle Engineering – is the key technical department behind the product creation and engineering processes from the initial concept through to the customer. We manage the technical content of programmes balancing customer attributes and commodities to create vehicles that inspire lifetime loyalty in our customers. Initially, you will study our processes and learn how to use the toolsets within your area followed by working alongside a senior engineer on vehicle development during the various phases of engineering from concept through to final vehicle sign-off.
Product Engineering Operations – underpins technical innovation and product delivery with engineering delivery, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, we utilise a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. You will work as part of a dynamic team creating engineering solutions to overcome complex problems and learn to use and become an expert user of a range of different digital engineering toolsets.
Product Integrity – is responsible for identifying issues related to our products where there may be an unreasonable risk to safety or compliance. This covers vehicles in use with customers, within the retail network, within vehicle distribution and manufacturing plants. You will learn to gather data to support investigations by liaising with teams across engineering and manufacturing, then prepare and present the technical information.
Manufacturing Engineering – is re-imagining what we have done in the past by developing in house solutions for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of all our facilities and processes. You will learn to use a wide variety of workshop tools and machinery, including laser cutting, computerised numerical control (CNC) machines and injection moulding. You will learn all the key engineering skills required to deliver our self-sufficiency projects and play an active role in the planning, design, manufacturing and installation of manufacturing facilities, tooling and processes.
In each area you will be a core member of the Product Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering team, contributing to the development of new vehicles and our facilities whilst mentored by industry experts.
The Applied Professional Engineering Programme (degree apprenticeship – Level 6) is a four-year degree apprenticeship programme, where you earn whilst you learn.
For the first two years, you will study a range of core subjects with pathway specialisms in years three and four. Modules are taught in weeklong blocks throughout the academic year by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), part of the University of Warwick. These will be a mix of lectures, practical laboratories, seminars and tutorials and you will also have access to a virtual learning environment for further support between blocks.
The final year of your apprenticeship will see you complete your end-point assessment and achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship, ready for an amazing career in engineering or manufacturing.
Modules (Year 1)
Engineering Maths, Materials & Manufacturing Processes, Design for Manufacturing & Assembly, Quality Methods, Introduction to Applied Management & Design, Planning Personal & Professional Development (work-based module), Electrical & Electronic Systems and Static Mechanics & Energy Methods.
Modules (Year 2)
Numerical Methods for Modelling, Rapid Prototyping & CAD/CAM, Instrumentation & Control, Engineering Systems, Project Management & Leadership, Programming & System Modelling, Negotiated Learning (work-based module) and Dynamic Mechanics & Thermofluids.
Specialism Modules (Years 3 & 4)
Advanced Quality Techniques, Productionising Designs, CAE & Physical Correlation, Stress Analysis, Aerodynamics, Individual Business Based Project and one of the following elective modules (chosen by Jaguar Land Rover to support our business needs); Mechatronics & Systems Control, Networking Infrastructure Communication & Interoperability of Systems, Industrial Processes, Materials for Advanced Applications or Functional Systems.
Our academic entry requirements are:
- GCSE Maths and English Language at level 5 (C) or higher and in addition 3 additional GCSEs level 5 (C) or above to include one STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) subject or Engineering Vocational qualification level 3/ 90 credits/540 GLH or higher.
- A-level Maths at grade B or higher and a second A-level at grade C or above in Physics; Chemistry; Engineering or Design and Technology.

In addition to the academic requirements at the assessment stage, we will also look for evidence of other qualifications, knowledge, experience or qualities – for example, a third A level or other further academic qualifications; a substantial time in employment or voluntary activity; a technical project or hobby or substantial responsibilities as a carer. You will also need to demonstrate a passion for engineering and strong motivation for the role.
