The Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences is in the Faculty of Engineering and Environment, and is a dynamic and stimulating environment. Ranked 13th for Human Geography and 14th for Physical Geographical Sciences in The Guardian University Guide in 2022 in the UK, the Department delivers excellence across its portfolio, delivering the highest overall student satisfaction in Environmental Science NSS outcomes in the UK in 2022.
100% of Department colleagues were submitted to REF 2021, across a diverse range of research interests, including Cold Environments & Ice Sheet Modelling, with developing areas of excellence around Geochemistry & Ecology, Global Development and Social & Cultural Geographies. This resulted in a growth in the volume of staff submitted from 19FTE to 80FTE. We hope to improve our Power submission from 43rd in REF2014 to a position within the top 3 Departments in the country, delivering income and esteem.
Reporting to the Faculty PVC as a key member of the leadership team, you will have a clear remit to provide strategic leadership and management of the Department with oversight of the academic portfolio and product/ programme development, learning and teaching, research and enterprise, and employer engagement. You will be expected to deliver a high-quality student experience and outcomes and to ensure the focus and priorities of research, professional practice and employer engagement support the University’s academic aims (including REF, TEF and KEF). You will also be responsible for the financial management of the Department and meeting targets in relation to income, student recruitment, student attainment, non-continuation and student satisfaction (NSS).
