Job Description

The Barbican Centre is a world renowned multi- disciplinary arts centre. We are seeking an experienced Exhibitions Manager to provide maternity cover for up to a year as part of the visual arts team.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from black, asian and minority ethnic backgrounds as they are currently underrepresented in the Visual Arts department at the Barbican Centre.

The visual arts are crucially important to Barbican’s success. The Art Gallery is dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions covering modern and contemporary art, design/architecture and photography, whereas The Curve is devoted to the commissioning of large scale site specific installations by contemporary artists. The Barbican aims to serve both artists and audiences and excels in the presentation of exhibitions that are thoughtful and curatorially ambitious.

The Exhibitions Manager is a key role in the Visual Arts team leading on the logistical coordination of Barbican Visual Arts exhibition programme and touring projects. The Exhibition Manager will act as an expert in the area of contracting, artwork insurance and transportation and will ensure legal compliance and implementation of best practice.

Working with the Head of Visual Arts and the Senior Manager, the Exhibitions Manager will also develop and manage strategic partnerships for touring visual arts projects to national and international venues.

We are looking for someone with substantial knowledge and experience of managing the coordination of complex international loan-based exhibition projects in a major public gallery or museum context. You will have a sound knowledge of the international art world and an excellent international contact network.
