Who are we looking for?
UKAEA have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Electrical Project Engineer to join the Electrical Engineering Department, supporting numerous programmes and projects across the organisation. Primarily focusing on new projects, design work and refurbishments in control and Instrumentation, electronics and power supplies this role would suit an engineer who has experience leading on projects whilst taking a practical approach in their work. Preparation of safety documentation for the delivery of projects is critical within the role.
If you are a team player and have experience in both the design and implementation of electronics, control & instrumentation systems or power electronics converters, from component through to system level, you could be a great fit for the role. In addition, a good understanding of electrical and electronics theory, including the manufacturing and build of power electronic systems with experience in power electronics is key.
What will you be responsible for?
The job holder will lead in the specification, design, modification, procurement/construction, installation and commissioning of both continuous and pulsed power conversion plant for the UKAEA. These power converters have a range of technologies including electrical systems, power electronics, small-signal electronics and control & instrumentation.
Key accountabilities include:
– Working with other team members to design and implement control, instrumentation and protection systems for existing and new plant
– Leading the technical and commercial management of contracts
– Proposing and implementing refurbishments of existing power converters, control systems and associated equipment
– Capturing requirements, developing designs, chairing design reviews and implementing designs
– Analysing behaviour of electronic circuits and power converters to identify faults and propose solutions
– Preparation of safety and plant documentation
– Leadership and supervision of staff and contractors
Essential skills, experience and competence required
– An honours degree in electrical/electronic engineering, or a related discipline, and relevant professional experience in an electrical/electronic engineering role. Or an HND in an electrical/electronics discipline, or equivalent qualification level, with a greater breadth and depth of experience/knowledge.
– Significant experience in the design and implementation of electronics, control & instrumentation systems or power electronics, from component through to system level.
– Experience of preparing safety documentation for the delivery of projects on-site.
– A practical approach combined with a good understanding of basic electrical and electronics engineering theory including the manufacturing and build of electronic systems with experience in power electronics or a strong desire to learn.
Desirable skills, experience and competence
– Knowledge of project engineering and contract management, or exposure to commercial processes with competitive tendering.
