Job Description

The Barbican is Europe’s largest multi-arts presenting a diverse range of art, music, theatre, dance, film and creative learning events.

The visual arts are crucially important to our success as we aim to serve both artists and audiences through exhibitions that are thoughtful, curatorially ambitious and often focus on timely reassessments and inter-disciplinary practice.

We are recruiting for an Apprentice who will provide support to the Art Gallery team with a range of practical administrative tasks and assist the PA to the Head of Visual Arts/Exhibitions Department Coordinator (PA/EDC) with day-to-day administration/office management duties.

This role will involve supporting the PA/EDC with the coordination of Art Gallery events as required, including Gallery private views and dinners as well as supporting the visual arts team with office administrative tasks, such as responding to enquiries received by phone and email, maintaining filing and archive systems and distributing post and maintaining office supplies. The post holder will also have an opportunity to be involved in other project-based tasks.

The successful candidate will have an excellent standard of written and spoken English with a high level of attention to detail. A confident telephone/video conferencing manner, excellent customer service skills and the ability to prioritise and work as part of a team are also essential. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Teams, Word, Excel and Outlook is highly desirable. It is not a requirement for applicants to hold a higher education qualification.

The position will incorporate one day per week of study towards a qualification in Level 3 Business Administration, and will provide an opportunity to explore own specific interests within the department.
We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic candidates for this opportunity. We are committed to increasing diversity of staff within the Barbican Centre and it is recognised that people of these backgrounds are currently under-represented within the visual arts team.

Based on current Government guidance the Barbican has made a decision to temporarily close to safeguard public health. Due to this closure the post holder will be required to work from home until the building re-opens and staff are able to work on site safely.
